Studio: Warner Home Video Release Date: 19/02/2008 Duration: 147 minutes Rating: NrThe 10th anniversary concert video of the international musical sensation Les Misérables may be the best thing to happen to appease the fans until a full independent film. Or it could be even better than the movies often subject to extramusical casting considerations and this 1995 dream cast is superb. Again, the same roles in the original company are Colm Wilkinson London (Valjean), Michael Ball (Marius) and Alun Armstrong (Thenardier). Broadway come Judy Kuhn (Cosette), Lea Salonga (Eponine) and Michael Maguire (Enjolras), comes from a generation later, in London Ruthie Henshall (Fantine). And from Australia comes Philip Quast (Javert)Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel score of Schoenberg capture the passion alive the epic story of Victor Hugo in the post-revolutionary France, combining tearful ballads (” I Dreamed a Dream, “” Bring Him Home “) and rousing anthems (” Do you hear the people sing “). The format of this concert is closer to the dramatic cantata rather than a fully staged production, the singers stand at their microphone stands with an orchestra and chorus behind them, but wear costumes and participate in the year. At certain points, as the culmination of the barricade scene, the video jumps to the action of a stage production. The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra sounds great, and it can be very exciting when 200 choristers (dressed in t-shirts) rise to a full-company number such as “One Day More”. Date also offer subtitles and scene information and help them throughout history.
147 minutes video contains images not seen when Les Mis is a guarantee of PBS-basic disk, including the recall, in which an increase of 17 players who have played Valjean around the world share “Can you hear the People Sing?” Everyone sings a line in his native language, a testament to the continued strength of this show the public everywhere. – David Horiuchi
